SLEEPERS WAKE members KRIS DAVID and KEVIN DESTEFANO joined me live in the ROCK ON RADIO studios this past Sunday evening.
The band is comprised of four young, very talented musicians from Hopewell, NJ. Founded circa 2004 by lead vocalist/guitar player Kris David, and his high school chum guitarist/keyboard player DAVID
SWOL, the band was the result of these two friends "just playing the guitar and writing songs." Liking what they heard, they soon added another high school friend, drummer Kevin Destefano. Admitting that
the addition of a drummer changed their sound and direction, the three began rehearsing and booking gigs.
Playing at first without a bassist, they pushed forward with bookings. After several shows as a trio, they eventually added a bass guitarist. ANDY DAVID (a/k/a AND), who happens to be the younger brother
of Kris, completed the present line-up. When I asked them why they waited so long to add the bottom end, the response was "we had to wait for And to turn eighteen!"
Their first EP, "The Black & Grey EP," is a unique blend of acoustic and electric sounds that are well-written, well-produced and, at times (due to David's vocal styling), somewhat haunting. One of my
listeners sent in an e-mail stating that "they need to submit their music to a show like 'Grey's Anatomy'" and, personally, I feel that he is correct. Telling us that their writing is influenced by "a love
of atmospheric music, love, highs, and music itself," their lyrical content reflects all four.
Recently, they were named one of "Eat, Sleep, Breathe Music" magazine's "Unsigned Artists of The Week." Their song off of "The Black & Grey EP" titled "Song That Breaks My Heart" was also named an "ESB
Song of The Day."
In support of their EP, they regularly play the NYC circuit. One can often find them at rooms like Arlene's Grocery, The Living Room, and Fontana's to name a few. They are also giving away free copies
of "The Black & Grey EP" at their shows as well as on their Myspace page (www.myspace.com/sleeperswake). Just send them a message and they'll
hook you up!
