My guest this past Sunday on ROCK ON RADIO was Media, PA acoustic/jazz
band FONTAINE COOLEY. They are a unique blend of sounds and talents.
This all-instrumental band has combined their rock 'n' roll roots with
an incredibly smooth jazz sound that is done so well that one fails to notice
that there is no vocal track.
Founded by songwriter/guitarist PETER HAYES and bassist TERRY BORTMAN
(formerly of Philadelphia, PA band The A's), they've embarked on an instrumental
journey combining various talents and musical styles that offers an amazing
array of sound. In addition to the two founding members, they are joined
by PAUL IABONI on mandolin, RYAN WARFEL on sax, and JEFF GORDON on zen drum.
In 2007, HAYES assembled the initial version of FONTAINE COOLEY with
a friend and his son. Together they recorded their initial CD, "Cheyney
Sessions." Unfortunately for Hayes, due to college and relocation, he was
left with a new CD and no band to support it. Enter Bortman. Together with
Hayes, they assembled the aforementioned cast and began playing dates in
support of the disc.
Describing theirselves as "cross-generational with backwoods pyrotechnics,"
they began playing in smaller clubs, at festivals, and have become somewhat
regulars at outdoor concert series throughout the Delaware Valley. Their
music has also been used during several Philadelphia Phillies games as a
backdrop for the seventh inning game recap. They have also broken into the
top twenty-five MP3s at Indiemusic.com and, this April, they'll be one of
the featured performers at the "Launch Music Conference" in Lancaster, PA.
Although the primary creative force behind the music is Hayes, all of
the members contribute individually as well as collectively to the FONTAINE
COOLEY sound. Hayes creates the chords and melodies and the others add their
own styles to the mix to create the incredible sounds of the band.
FONTAINE COOLEY's CD is available on CD Baby, iTunes, as well as at all
of their shows. Check them out at
This Sunday features the return of the WILLIAMSBOY (www.williamsboy.com)
to ROCK ON RADIO. This singer/songwriter from Absecon, NJ has a new CD to
discuss and plenty of future gigs to tell us about.
Turn on... Tune in... and, as always... ROCK ON!
