So This Is How It Starts With Jean Mallia

JEAN MALLIA is a pop/rocker from Flemington, NJ. This teenaged artist began compiling material and recording her first EP at the age of fifteen, finally releasing it to the masses in January of 2009.

The EP, titled "So This Is How It Starts...," is a three-song release that showcases MALLIA's talented songwriting ability. All of the music and lyrics on the EP were written by Jean herself. On the CD, MALLIA had help from her producer Robert Sands of Sands Creative Studios, Inc. Sands performed as a session player on piano and synthesizers, along with Joseph Conti on bass and electric guitars. Throw in some programmed drum tracks, and multiple background vocalists, and you have a well-done, well-produced sound that both "pops" and "rocks."

The EP is truly a reflection of this young spunky songwriter. MALLIA has a personality that is as infectious as her smile and good looks. Making her radio debut on my program, she was extremely relaxed, upbeat, engaging and very personable. This was never more evident then when she played her song "Prove Me Wrong" live in studio. She stood up, kicked her shoes off and let it rip.

Along with Jean came her father and current drummer STEVE MALLIA, and her "Mom-ager," her mother TERRY MALLIA. MALLIA enjoys the total support of her parents and siblings in all of her musical endeavors. Now, most teenaged musicians would shy away from having a parent in the band, but not MALLIA. She embraces it whole heartedly. Jean told us on air how she "coaxed her dad to get his drums out of the attic, and jam with her." Now the two of them "rock out" in the basement as they prepare for her maiden show at The Bitter End in NYC on Sept. 23rd.

MALLIA began playing piano at the age of four, yet prefers to write her music on the acoustic guitar. Drawing comparisons to Taylor Swift, MALLIA now has a desire to escape that stereotype and take on a more "indie artist" sound. Her future plans are to diversify her sound and attempt new and different styles in her music. "I don't want to be bubble gum pop anymore," she told us as she searched for the proper words to describe the direction that she wishes to take her music. Striving for a more mature sound is this singer/songwriter in her future endeavors, unveiling two new songs live in-studio that differed from the EP in a way that leads one to believe that she'll accomplish her goal.

Keep a sharp eye out for this up-and-coming artist as I think that we'll be hearing more from her in the future. To hear or purchase her EP "So This Is How It Starts...," you can do so at CD Baby and Dig Station, or they are always available at her shows. Check out JEAN MALLIA at
