RADIO FICTION is made up of various different members at various different times. However, this past Sunday evening, three of them stopped by the ROCK ON RADIO studios. I was visited by drummer/guitarist MATT SCHIFANO, bass guitarist JOE CHIANESE, and lead vocalist RACHEL ROCCO.
A cover band by trade, they have recently begun to record some of their original material. SCHIFANO and ROCCO have been the primary singer/songwriters on the project with the steady guidance and experience of CHIANESE. A drummer by trade, SCHIFANO has only recently picked up the guitar and, even more so, begun to write original music.
I mentioned the "experience" of CHIANESE, a point which is not lost on his younger band mates. CHIANESE told us of how ROCCO and SCHIFANO pulled him out of retirement and re-ignited his passion for playing music. A stabilizing influence, Joe not only lays down the bass tracks, but acts as a guiding path for his much-less-traveled associates. On stage he is cool and collected, which allows ROCCO and SCHIFANO to exude confidence and professionalism. CHIANESE joked on air that when on stage "it looks like I'm up there with my kids!"
SCHIFANO wears many hats in the band. When they play with a full band, he is their drummer. When he does open mics or showcases, he plays guitar. Once again, he is also the songwriter of the group.
ROCCO's primary function in the band is the lead vocalist; which she handles very well. Along with SCHIFANO, she contributes lyrically to the original material. Confessing that she is a theatrical performer, and that this was her preference prior to RADIO FICTION, she now embraces the original music process. Citing her influences as Joplin, Etheridge, and Pink, one can draw their own conclusions as to her vocal style, as she seems to incorporate all three in her singing.
The band is recording at SBG Studios which is owned by guitarist GARY JAKUBICKI. They haven't decided as yet as to whether this will be an EP or a full-length CD. However, one thing that they do know is that they are really enjoying the process. They spoke fondly of their time spent in the studio, as well as JAKUBICKI's help and influence.
So, be on the lookout for these young artists as they make their way into the original music scene. RADIO FICTION can be found on Facebook as well as MySpace at www.myspace.com/radiofictionnj.
This Sunday, September 12, at 10pm EST, my scheduled guest on ROCK ON RADIO is Philadelphia-area band SINNERS SAINTS. These guys are a hard rockin', driving group that are guaranteed to get you moving.
Turn on... Tune in... and, as always, ROCK ON!
