Finding the Work Space

Indie Solutions

I have complained about lack of sleep before, and I am sure to do it again, but the life I am about to carve out for myself doesn't leave much time for it. Dear readers, as I mentioned previously, the time has come for me to realize a dream that's been floating around, sometimes in the front, sometimes in the back, of my mind of opening up a "real" business somewhere, either an office or a storefront or something like that. These past years, the "offices" I've kept have always been these little locations, nothing more than a table at a cafe, or a perch in the park, or a fold-out chair in a drafty kitchen, or the futon in a friend's flat somewhere in southern Germany, with the only things actually making it an office being my mobile phone and an internet connection (and some tea and cookies and stuff). I mean, really, what does a traveling musician that dabbles in promotions and production and such a small scale need, other than a comfy seat and some connections to clients and constituents?

Well, I have decided that those little things that defined my office of the past are just not enough. Sure, I'll be setting up these haphazard workspaces here and there as the future unfolds, but I am learning a valuable lesson. James Dalton wants a "War Room". It's not enough just to sit down with a coffee, open the laptop, place the mobile to the right, hang a "The Doctor Is In" sign next to me and proceed with work. What needs to be done is to create my War Room, my special space in the world where all the tools that I'd need are at my disposal: books, notebooks, rolodex, laptops, posters, odds and ends, tea kettle, some instruments and some neighbors. The War Room where I can engage myself in what I've always referred to as "Empire Building". Hang a large map, gather up some multicolored thumbtacks and start making some shit happen. Route some tours, navigate some new markets, etc.

Indie Solutions, as I have described it before, is a consulting company first, but it is also an assistance and devising outfit. With Indie Solutions, I can allow my creativity to evolve in new ways, and to develop new opportunities for me and, of course, my clientele. We'll help strategize and implement, etc. Having this War Room available to me, this "office" as they call them, will be key. Those of you that know me, or have been readers for some time, will probably be amused with the idea of me sitting in an office, fighting with the fax machine, typing away, maybe filing my nails and stuff; but, really, this is the beginning of a whole new level of business for me. I am really excited to start this journey, because it can only allow my music career, or whatever I'd call, it to flourish as well.

So, I am writing this one to you all on the eve of actually meeting with a landlord in Asbury Park. This is my first time doing this sort of thing, and I think I know what I am looking for. For those of you that have started your own business before, you already know these feelings, but for those of you (myself included) who haven't done this yet, it's exciting. I need to feel like one of these spaces I'll be seeing tomorrow in Asbury Park (because I have to open this in Asbury Park) will be the War Room that I want, and not just any old place. I'll be spending a lot of time there, hope to create a lot of work there, to engage other people in there, to build an empire from there. That's what I hope anyway. So, yup, Asbury Park calls and I'll be answering in the later afternoon and, with luck, I'll be leading the fight by the start of the new year.

If you, the reader, are looking for some help getting new ideas up and running, or to streamline some of the existing ones, or if you just need advice on instruments, songwriting, entertainment and art curating or booking a tour, feel free to contact me here. I'll be leading off with some extremely affordable rates for lower impact consultations and new clients. By all means, get in touch and say hello. With any luck, you'll be sitting in the War Room with me, and we'll be staring down the map with a smile, excited about what the world has to offer and prepared to reach out and accept it...
