Saturday, October 20, 2007 was a unique day at the Count Basie Theatre. That afternoon, the sounds of Opera and Rock & Roll could be heard in various locations in the theatre. Downstairs in the Cool School room, Rock & Roll drifted to the street as the kids involved with the Rockit For Kids Program jammed while upstairs, the sounds of Opera Singers drifted through the halls.

Michael Capasso, the General Director for Dicapo Opera Theatre hosted a Master Class for nine students in the Cool School Studio space. The 90 minute long workshop allowed students to perform opera selections for Mr. Capasso. He critiqued their performance and then had them perform again, addressing the component he spoke about. The students were dressed as if they were auditioning for a role and Mr. Capasso explained to them the audition process and what it takes to make it in the opera business. Yvonne Scuidery says, “very cool workshop from my perspective. We need more like this.”

At the other end of the building, the Rockit for Kids were doing just that, rockin’. Bruce Gallipani heads up this program which gives young musicians an instant opportunity to play Rock & Roll with their peers, bringing them together to perform live as a band and experience the dynamics of working together to achieve a common goal.

The Count Basie Theatre Cool School is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization located at 99 Monmouth Street in Red Bank. For information on classes, workshops and the scholarship program, contact Yvonne Scuidery at 732-224-8778 x 106 or visit www.countbasietheatre.org.
